چکیده

[1] Methyl bromide (CH3Br) constitutes the largest source of bromine atoms to the stratosphere and plays an important role in stratospheric ozone depletion. However, the CH3Br atmospheric budget remains uncertain. We report the first measurements of stable carbon isotope ratios for atmospheric CH3Br and explore the constraints they provide for the atmospheric budget. The measured dC of CH3Br ranged from 44.8% to 41.2% (mean value 43.1%, N = 7). This isotopic value is less negative than the anthropogenic source signature ( 53.2 to 47.5%), but is indistinguishable from the only quantified natural source signature ( 43.0%). Based on known source signatures and our atmospheric measurements, we predict that the mean kinetic isotope effect associated with sinks must be small (2–4%). We further estimate that a total phaseout of anthropogenic sources would likely change the isotopic composition of atmospheric CH3Br by 2–4%, and that this change would be difficult to detect with current measurement techniques.

Carbon isotope ratios of methyl bromide and methyl chloride emitted from a coastal salt marsh

[1] Methyl bromide (CH3Br) and methyl chloride (CH3Cl) play important roles in stratospheric ozone depletion, but their atmospheric budgets have large uncertainties. The analysis of stable isotope composition of methyl halides may provide useful independent information for further constraining their budgets. Here we report the first measurements of CH3Br and CH3Cl stable carbon isotope ratios e...

Carbon isotope fractionation of methyl bromide during agricultural soil fumigations

The isotopic composition of methyl bromide (CH3Br) has been suggested to be a potentially useful tracer for constraining the global CH3Br budget. In order to determine the carbon isotopic composition of CH3Br emitted from the most significant anthropogenic application (pre-plant fumigation) we directly measured the δ13C of CH3Br released during commercial fumigation. We also measured the isotop...

Large carbon isotope fractionation associated with oxidation of methyl halides by methylotrophic bacteria.

The largest biological fractionations of stable carbon isotopes observed in nature occur during production of methane by methanogenic archaea. These fractionations result in substantial (as much as approximately 70 per thousand) shifts in delta(13)C relative to the initial substrate. We now report that a stable carbon isotopic fractionation of comparable magnitude (up to 70 per thousand) occurs...

Determination of stable carbon isotopic compositions of low molecular weight dicarboxylic acids and ketocarboxylic acids in atmospheric aerosol and snow samples.

We report a new method developed for the determination of stable carbon isotopic composition of homologous alpha,omega-dicarboxylic acids and phthalic acid isolated from environmental samples such as atmospheric aerosols and snow. Dicarboxylic acids are derivatized with BF3/1-butanol to dibutyl esters, which are analyzed for the stable carbon isotopic composition using a capillary GC interfaced...

An isotopic approach for understanding the CH(3)Br budget of the atmosphere.

The atmospheric budget of methyl bromide (CH(3)Br), an ozone-depleting gas, is highly uncertain, because it has complex sources and sinks. Although oceans, biomass burning, and industrial production are identified as the major sources, the fraction of CH(3)Br that is contributed by each source is not well known. A mass-balance approach that exploits differences in the carbon isotopic signature ...
